Get involved

Spear volunteers are a vital part of helping young people transform their lives and move closer to finding employment. There are a number of ways you can get involved.

1. Support a Spear Celebration

Spear Celebration marks the end of the six week programme. Over an evening you can meet our young people and help their friends and family to celebrate their achievements. It is a really powerful evening and we would be honoured to have you join us. This is also a great chance for volunteers to get involved, helping to set up and run the ceremony.

2. Volunteer as an interviewer

Mock interviewing is a crucial part of the Spear Programme. Many Spear trainees have never had an interview so practicing is vital. Mock interviews take place every six weeks on a Friday from 3pm – 5pm. If you would like to come individually, or bring your colleagues for a team-building event, please get in touch!

3. Host a company visit

Give a class of Spear young people the invaluable opportunity to experience an office environment, often for the first time, by hosting a visit to your company. To get started you could come to a Spear Celebration where you will be able to meet our young people and join their friends and family in celebrating their achievements.

4. Provide job opportunities

Why not offer work to a Spear candidate?

We spend 90 hours preparing each candidate through our award-winning personal development programme, the Spear programme. Our approach primarily focuses on the attitudinal and behavioural issues that employers cite as major barriers to long-term success in their young recruits.

Then upon employment, we continue to coach the young person for up to one year, and support their manager for a further 90 days, to ensure they are properly integrated into the role.

5. Give financially

The most valuable way to give is through a regular donation by Direct Debit or via your company’s Payroll Giving Scheme. Regular giving allows us to improve the planning for our work and to avoid lean periods. This means that we can be even more effective at helping young people build their future.
